The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 ref. 311.92.44.30.01.001 is a 44.25 mm black-ceramic chronograph created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 8 mission. Its skeletonized black dial reveals a laser-ablated lunar surface on the movement beneath, with the near side of the Moon visible from the front and the far side revealed through the sapphire caseback. Yellow chronograph hands and accents provide a vivid contrast against the predominantly black construction, while a perforated black leather strap with a yellow rubber interior completes the distinctive design.
Inside is Omega’s manually wound calibre 1869, a specially decorated version of the Moonwatch-derived calibre 1861. The movement operates at 3 Hz and provides approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Its lunar-surface decoration is central to the identity of the watch rather than simply a hidden mechanical detail.
Reference 311.92.44.30.01.001 is particularly significant within the Dark Side of the Moon family because it connects Omega’s ceramic watchmaking with the Apollo 8 mission, whose crew became the first humans to orbit the Moon and see its far side. Its combination of skeletonized construction, lunar movement decoration and bold yellow accents gives the reference a character clearly distinct from the standard Dark Side of the Moon models.
